Are you one of

"THE CHOSEN "

A Bible Study in 1st Peter

1 Peter 1:1  "Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

who are chosen.

HOW?

  • 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,

  • by the sanctifying work of the Spirit,

WHY?

  • to obey Jesus Christ and

  • be sprinkled with His blood:

  • May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.

1.  Was this written to only those and only for those "who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia"?

2.  What does it mean to be "CHOSEN"?

3.  Is everyone CHOSEN?

4.  What does it mean that you were CHOSEN according to the foreknowledge of God the Father?

5.  What does it mean that you were CHOSEN by the sanctifying work of the Spirit?  (Sanctified is the devoting or setting apart of anything to the worship or service of God.  To be consecrated)

6.  Why does any of this matter?

Lord willing, I would like to continue this study through 1 Peter and 2 Peter.  Will you come with me?

My prayer is that this will be more - Much More - than just a study.  I pray that God will use this in our live to get us ready for what is upon us.

He is able.  His Word is Alive.  The Spirit is at work.  Will you join Him?

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young

Peter wrote this letter to a group of Christians scattered throughout the northern areas of Asia Minor, which probably included both Jews and Gentiles.  The apostle addressed the letter’s recipients as “aliens” , a word indicating that Peter was speaking not just to Jews or just to Gentiles but to Christians who were living their lives in such a way that they would have stood out as "alien" among the surrounding culture and to  all future Christians who find themselves in similar circumstances.

What does it mean to be "Chosen"?

CHOSEN, as used by Peter and throughout the New Testament, means you ae "Picked out and chosen by God to obtain salvation through Christ.   All true believers, Christians, are called "chosen or elect" of God.

The Messiah is called "Elect," as appointed by God to the most exalted office conceivable.  Choice, select, i.e. the best of its kind or class, excellence preeminent:  this also applies to individual Christians who are true followers  and joint heirs with Jesus.

Is everyone CHOSEN?

Matthew 22:1  "Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying, 2“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. 3“And he sent out his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come. 4“Again he sent out other slaves saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened livestock are all butchered and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast.”’ 5“But they paid no attention and went their way, one to his own farm, another to his business, 6and the rest seized his slaves and mistreated them and killed them. 7“But the king was enraged, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire. 8“Then he said to his slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. 9‘Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.’ 10“Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests."

11  “But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, 12and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?’ And the man was speechless. 13“Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

What does it mean that you were CHOSEN according to the foreknowledge of God the Father?

“God made His choice based on merely knowing the future” is not what the Bible teaches.   Jesus said, "You did not choose me, but I chose you" (John 15:16). Our choosing God is based on God's choosing us.  God's foreknowledge of his people is not merely his awareness of what they will do. His foreknowledge of his people is his acknowledgement of them as His Own.

God is calling every man and woman, boy and girl, to Himself.  Not all will respond.  (click here for a helpful commentary)

What does it mean you were CHOSEN by the sanctifying work of the Spirit?

The Work of God in CHOOSING comes to you as  you are CHOSEN "by the sanctifying work of the Spirit."  This is the same way Paul spoke of election in 2 Thessalonians 2:13, "God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through by the sanctifying work of the Spirit."

God the Spirit cooperates with God the Father, convicts you, guides you, teaches you,  that you are CHOSEN, and turning that Work of the Spirit into practical holiness by his powerful work in your life.  You are CHOSEN.  (click here for a helpful commentary)

Now it is your turn to answer a question without commentary.

Why does any of this matter to you?

1.  Do you realize this was written to you - about 2,000 years ago?

2.  What does it mean to you, that God has called you?  Picked you?  Chosen you as His own for His purposes?

3.  God knows.  He knows you.  God has been waiting patiently.  What now?

4.  The Spirit has been at work all this time and is still working.  Are you ready?

5.  Does that matter to you?  Tell me about that.
